Heating Systems Basics
In general, according to the regulations of utility services, it is prohibited to interfere with the operation of the central systems of the house. In exceptional cases, when the battery is leaking or has ruptured, emergency intervention is permitted. But if the heating system in your home is connected to the central system correctly, then you can try turning off the heating yourself. There is nothing particularly difficult about this.
Correct connection means that the heating is connected to the general system using two ball valves (Figure 1) and a jumper called a bypass (Figure 2). This connection is called one-pipe. (Figure 3)

Important Modern heaters are filled with water, which plays the role of a coolant. In winter, hot water flows through the heating pipes, and cold water in summer. Oddly enough, it is filling with water that saves the insides of the radiator from rusting from the inside. After all, if all the water is drained from the heating system, then its remaining drops will create a microclimate for the formation of corrosion.
Is water needed in the system in summer?
The main condition for long-term proper operation of radiators is the absence of corrosion, which can appear both in empty batteries and those filled with liquid without air access.
In fact, there should be water in the system at all times, regardless of the season. But many service companies neglect this condition and drain it immediately after the end of the heating period.
Utility services justify this by saying that in the summer they carry out repair work, during which the water in the systems interferes and has to be drained. In addition, many residents change radiators during repairs, which also requires a complete release of the system, especially if the entrance has a common riser. And constant filling and emptying causes loss of time and unnecessary financial costs.
But, since the water does not completely drain from the radiators, a humid environment forms inside, leading to deformation of the metal. Therefore, if the service company drains water immediately after the end of the season, the shut-off valves should be closed the day before.
It will be important to open the air bleed valves, which will help avoid excess pressure in the radiators, which most often occurs when the system cools down. The taps should be opened a few days before the start of the next heating season.
Correct procedure
A bypass is a small branch from the common riser in the form of a connecting jumper between pipes. The presence of a bypass will ensure that you are cutting off the battery only in your apartment, and not in the entire house. If your heating system is connected exactly as in the figures above, then in order to shut off the battery you need to use taps. The question arises: should you use the top or bottom tap?
You need to know right away that you don’t need to close two taps! As we already know, hot water flows through the pipes in winter, heating the heater. If you turn off both taps, the temperature of the water inside will drop sharply. It would seem that this is what we need! But at the same time, the volume of water filling the radiator will decrease. And the empty space will be filled by a vacuum, which creates pressure inside.
As a result of excess pressure, the battery may crack or even burst! To painlessly turn off the heating if you are hot, you just need to close the bottom tap. The top one remains open so that the heater is full and does not create a vacuum or air pockets.
That is, your procedure consists of 3 points:
- Feel that you are hot.
- Make sure your system is equipped with valves and a bypass.
- Close the bottom tap, but do not touch the top one.
How to quickly heat a room in an emergency?
There are several effective methods:
- Use a portable gas stove or a homemade stove made from a barrel. Choose gas, wood, gasoline as fuel.
- If you don’t have such a device, the following will do: alcohol lamps, smokers, and other devices.
- You can heat metal objects (cuts of pipes, rails) on the stove. Gradually cooling, they will warm the air in the room.
Attention! If you light an open fire in a room, there is a danger of burning or causing a fire. For reference: if the flames have blue tongues, it means carbon monoxide, which is hazardous to health, is being released.

Why turn off the battery at the beginning of the heating season?
As soon as they announce that the heating season has begun, it is better to immediately turn off the battery to avoid blockages. The fact is that when hot water starts running, a huge amount of slag will flow through the pipes, which clogs the radiators. Turn on the battery on the second day after the start of the season. This is done simply, open both taps and bleed the air through the Mayevsky tap, which is equipped with most radiators.
Interesting When closing pipes in the summer, you must always remember that the battery must always be filled with water. By closing the valve on the radiator after the end of the heating season, you will leave it filled with water. This will prevent corrosion.
When to turn off radiators
There are several situations when you need to turn off the water in the battery:
- in the event of an emergency that threatens to flood your own and neighbors’ homes with hot coolant;
- if you decide to paint the radiator during the heating season;
- when you need to change or wash the battery without blocking the riser;
- you need to limit the flow of heat into a room that is hot in winter.
Radiators that are too hot are the cause of heat and stuffiness in the apartment
Note. Some apartment owners practice shutting off heating radiators for the summer while preserving the coolant. The goal is to protect heating devices from clogging during the autumn start-up of the system, when a lot of rust flows through the pipes. Below we will explain how to do this correctly.
Now the main point: you will never have problems with how to disconnect a radiator from a centralized system if it is connected according to the correct circuit using shut-off valves (ball valves). You will be able to shut off the coolant flow at any time if such a need arises, without disturbing the thermal conditions of adjacent apartments. The shutdown algorithm is simple:
- Close the lower and then the upper valve on the battery.
- If you plan to paint the heating device, then the previous step is sufficient. Wait until the radiator is cold and paint.
- When it is necessary to replace batteries in the middle of winter, before removing each heater, release the pressure through the Mayevsky valve. Then unscrew the bottom plug and carefully drain the water, then unscrew the joints and dismantle the device.
Correct connection of the heating device to the central heating risers
A separate question is how to properly turn on the heating radiator so that there is no air pocket left in it, which prevents maximum heating of the surface and air in the apartment. Here the algorithm is similar: you need to open the lower valve, then the upper one, and at the end release the remaining air using the Mayevsky tap.
The handle stands along the axis of the pipe - the valve is open, across it - closed
Note. If you do the opposite and open the top valve first, you risk leaving some air inside the sections of the device. This is not critical, but the de-airing procedure will have to be repeated several times.

How to shut off a battery without a valve
Let's say that your apartment is heated by a two-pipe heating system; it is not equipped with a shut-off jumper and taps. As a rule, these are outdated cast iron monsters that are still found in homes. Is it possible to block it?
Figure 4 – Battery connected without a jumper in a two-pipe circuit
Unfortunately, it is impossible to turn off such a system during the heating season. By shutting off this battery, you will block the riser and the whole house will freeze. You can turn off the two-pipe circuit yourself only if a pipe in your apartment breaks, or if the battery leaks.
This is done as follows:
- Go to the entrance heating point.
- You are looking for 2 vertical pipes that go up to your apartment.
- Turn the taps on them, i.e. turn off the heating throughout the house.
- Explain the situation to your neighbors.
Proper use of thermostats
As mentioned above, it is very effective to use thermostats in the heating system. But they also need to be used correctly. You cannot use thermostats without jumpers. There is nothing complicated. The fact is that if you start regulating the flow of water using a thermostat, and the jumper is not installed, this will lead to the fact that the total volume of water passing through your apartment will become less, which is unacceptable.
Like any device, the thermostat can also become clogged. This is possible when the radiator jumper is disabled. Needless to say, a stream of dirty and rusty water can pour into the pipes not only with the first turn on. There is an emergency situation on the heating main and there you have it, dirty water in the pipes.
Considering that there is no jumper (since it is disabled), the entire flow of dirt will go to the thermostat. This device is simply not adapted to such operating conditions, as a result of which a blockage may form, which will lead to the fact that water simply stops flowing through the batteries. This situation is not so scary if it only affects you. Now, if the common riser is captured, then the angry neighbors, left without heat in the cold, are unlikely to thank you.
Therefore, if you are thinking about how to properly shut off a battery, you should always remember that the jumper should always be open. Even if you don't have thermostats installed, try not to block the jumper. It can be turned off for a short time, in a situation where you suspect that the radiators are a little clogged. In this case, the entire water pressure will pass through the batteries. But just remember, after some time the jumper must be returned to its working position.
So, let's summarize. In order for the heating system in your apartment to operate for a long time and uninterruptedly, the following conditions must be met:
- It is correct to turn on the batteries after a long dormant season.
Install thermostats.
Install shut-off ball valves.
Be sure to install a special jumper on the radiators.
What is required to work safely?
When the apartment is hot enough and the owners want to turn off the heating radiator, then you can consider installing a temperature regulator on the batteries. If there is a bypass, a thermostat is installed on the radiator, which regulates the temperature in the room. If there is no bypass, then you cannot install a regulator, because this can regulate the temperature not only in this apartment, but also in the neighbors on the riser. In such a situation, you just need to replace the heating radiator and install a bypass.
Bypass unit and functions
Using a bypass, repair work can be carried out at any time, even in winter, if hot circulating water is available. You just have to turn off the tap located in front of the radiator. Water will immediately stop flowing into the pipes, and circulation will go through the bypass itself. This will allow the apartment owners not to go down to the basement and not block the common riser.
The device itself consists of pipes having a smaller diameter than the pipes of the outlet and supply lines. The presence of two ball valves allows you to properly shut off the radiator and direct circulating water through the bypass.
DESIGN PLACE FOR PLAY
Create a separate space in the room where the baby will be awake. Let the toys lie there, a place will be “cleared” for rolling cars or building pyramids, and don’t let chairs, a table, or a closet get in the way. The child should play with pleasure, he needs a certain place for this. And at the same time, you should not worry that, having played too much, he will crawl in the wrong direction and hurt himself on the table leg, or turn the chair over on himself.
The principle of adjusting the temperature of heating radiators
It is directly related to the design features of this element and its installation. The valve is a ball with a through hole.
The operation of the crane is controlled using a handle fixed to the ball by a rod.
Important! To install the device, you need to choose the location wisely so that turning the handle in the future does not interfere with other devices of the heating system. The diameters of the tap and pipe must be identical.
The diameters of the tap and pipe must be identical.
The device must be fixed in parallel
as it is twisted using tow or special tape. They provide the mechanism with additional protection against leaks. The correct installation is further verified by applying water pressure.
Photo 1. Ball valve device for adjusting the temperature in a heating radiator. Arrows indicate parts of the product.
Activating the handle promotes the movement of the mechanism around its own axis. Rotating the ball hole to the nozzles and pipeline inlets makes it possible to circulate coolant through it
, otherwise the fluid flow will be blocked.
The ball in such mechanisms can be fixed and movable. In the first case, it is attached to the rod so that it remains completely static. The tightness of such a connection is ensured by bolts or disc springs.
The movable ball is capable of moving depending on the degree of water pressure on it
. Due to this possibility, this type of mechanism is more widespread than the first.
How to open a tap
This is done to supply the maximum possible amount of coolant in order to provide the room with heat. To adjust the mechanism, you need to turn the handle parallel to its own axis and the pipe.
For convenience, there are protrusions on the faucet body indicating restrictions on the degree of its opening. This is done counterclockwise.
How to close
With this action, the circulation of the coolant completely stops. This needs to be done when there is a need to reduce the radiator temperature to a minimum, for example, in the summer.
The handle of the device in the “closed” position should form an angle of 90 degrees with its axis and the pipeline.
According to the protrusions, the movement of the handle to stop the fluid circulation should be done
clockwise.
Reference.
In both situations, in the absence of a handle, it is possible to determine the position of the tap
by the groove
. If it is aligned with the pipeline and the mechanism itself, then its position is “open”, otherwise the fluid flow is blocked.
How to turn a jammed tap on a battery and adjust it
Often this situation arises if the position of the mechanism is not periodically changed and developed as a preventive measure.
Before taking directed steps to repair the device,
it is worth trying to do it yourself.
Battery adjustment process
Often, at the beginning of construction, the heating system is adjusted by simply routing pipes of various thicknesses from the boiler to the radiators. However, this approach is not enough to effectively control the heating system.
Even if the boiler is programmed to a certain temperature, the radiators may be colder than required. This occurs because there is a large amount of air in the pipes. By lowering it, water can flow more freely through the pipes. Consequently, the room will begin to warm up more quickly and with increased efficiency. Therefore, when adjusting the batteries, you should first bleed the air from the radiators. (See also: Piping heating radiators)
Directly for these purposes, absolutely on one side of each battery there is a special tap, by turning which you can release unnecessary air. However, be careful when opening it slowly to avoid a sudden release of hot steam, as it is under high pressure.
To properly regulate heating batteries, just opening and closing the special control valve on the battery is, of course, not enough. Depending on how many batteries are connected to the boiler, open them a certain number of turns. For example, you have three radiators connected to a boiler. To ensure that the pressure is evenly distributed throughout the heating system, open the first radiator a couple of turns, the second by three, and the third by four. This adjustment of the heating radiators in the apartment will allow you to heat the premises in a shorter time.
If your system has a forced water pumping function, it becomes possible to install so-called three-way valves on each radiator. If the boiler has sufficient power, adjusting the temperature of the heating battery will not be difficult. In general, to simplify the process of setting the required temperature, each radiator must have special valves. (See also: Connection diagram for heating batteries)
Their presence will allow you to control the flow of heat and rational consumption of heating equipment. For example, if the room has become too hot, or it is not in use and is closed, then the flow of hot water into the radiator can be reduced or completely shut off using such a tap.
What to do with a stuck ball valve
When ball valves are not used for their intended purpose for a long time, they begin to jam due to the formation of scale. Do not use brute force to try to open the valve using a gas wrench or pliers. When the faucet handle does not unscrew immediately, then:
- You need to unscrew the fixing nut and remove the “butterfly” from the rod.
- Under the “butterfly” there is a nut that secures the plastic seal, which needs to be loosened. A key is used and the tap is turned half a turn.
- It is also possible to use a tool that allows you to firmly grasp the stem. It is possible to use an adjustable wrench. The rod turns without excessive effort.
- If resistance is felt, you need to move in the opposite direction, gradually increasing the amplitude by 5 degrees.
- It is necessary to develop the rotation of the rod until a right angle is formed. If this result is achieved, the gland nut is returned and the butterfly handle is installed.
Important! When you have WD-40 lubricant in the house, apply it to the soured rod and leave for 10 minutes. This makes it easier to unscrew.
If there are no locking devices
Due to technical features, control mechanisms cannot be installed in cast iron radiators. If there are no switches, you will have to change the excess temperature in the room yourself. Let's look at four working methods.
Wrapping
If you don’t know how to reduce the heat from a radiator, we recommend covering metal surfaces with thick material. The planes of the structure can be wrapped in an old blanket or several thick blankets. The less heat the radiator emits, the faster the temperature will drop.
Additionally, open the windows for ventilation. On average, within an hour the temperature from +30 C will decrease by 1-2 C. In order not to catch a cold when the doors are open, it is better for the inhabitants to stay in another room.
Heating cast iron radiators can be wrapped in bed linen folded in several layers. The element is hidden from the window sill to the bottom line, trying to hide every centimeter of metal. In addition to the main radiating surface, pipes and a common riser must be masked.

High temperatures from the radiator are often accompanied by low humidity levels. Discomfort manifests itself in the form of dry mucous membranes of the eyes and nose. Wet towels, which cover the battery in 2-3 layers, will help to reduce the unpleasant sensation for a short time. For regular use, it is better to purchase a humidifier. The device allows you to regulate the humidity in the room.
You can sew a protective cover with lining from thick or terry fabric. The design should completely cover all parts of the cells, hiding the hot metal from the occupants of the room. Fixation is ensured by an elastic band or fasteners. When the temperature drops, the element can be easily removed.

Blinds
A special screen will help reduce the heat from the battery. The model resembles the usual devices for windows. In closed mode, there is a dense surface in front of the radiator. In the active position, the slats rise, allowing hot air to enter the room.
The design has simple installation, so the owner can install the blinds within 10-15 minutes. The screen protects home occupants from burns, which is important for families with small children and animals. The decorative surface will not only hide the radiator, but also bring the right mood to the design.

Homemade screen
The heat from the battery spreads in different directions. To minimize discomfort, professionals advise using a special screen. The design not only reduces excess heat from the heating surface, but also ensures uniform radiation.
In homemade types, multilayer materials with a foil base are used. Inside the raw material there is foam or polyethylene foam. When combined with a shiny surface, 80-85% of the heat can be shielded.

Foil material is sold in the form of small rolls. The thickness of the product is from 3 to 4 mm. The product is mounted in a polystyrene foam box with the shiny side facing the hot surface. When it’s hot, the screen is simply placed against the radiator, covering all sections. The pipes are wrapped in cut strips of raw materials.
How to turn off a radiator without shut-off valves
Sometimes radiators made of cast iron or steel can be installed in a home. The design of these devices does not require cut-off fittings. In this regard, it will not be possible to turn off the appliances during the heating period.
The old heating scheme involves connecting radiators in apartment buildings to risers without bypasses. If there is no cut-off reinforcement, the action algorithm is as follows:
- You will need a container where the water will drain. There are situations when the flow hits the side with powerful pressure. In such a situation, you need to wrap a rag around the area where the hot water comes from.
- It is necessary to notify the heating company of the home about the situation.
- It is important to take care of access to the basement, find the keys, and open the door.
- Try to close the riser on your own.
To turn off the heating riser, you need to go down to the heating station in the entrance. It is necessary to find vertical pipes embedded in the main line. Then you will need to determine the emergency riser in the apartment building for proper closure.
When you have managed to turn on the tap, you need to call your household back and find out if the radiator has stopped leaking. If the problem cannot be solved, you need to open the riser valve and continue the search. It is necessary to close the available valves one by one until the pipe responsible for the apartment is found.
How to make a house warmer without heating devices?
This situation, such as the rapid cooling of an apartment due to a decrease in atmospheric air, repeats itself annually. Owners should consider how they can improve the thermal efficiency of their living space. How can you make your apartment cool down more slowly, retaining the heat accumulated over the summer longer?
It is necessary to take care of insulating the house in advance. Experts say that up to 14% of heat evaporates through glass. Another 30 percent of thermal energy escapes through cracks in windows and doors. 15% of warm air leaks out of the house through the entrance opening or a broken window in the entrance.
The heating hasn't been turned on yet, but blankets and rugs no longer help? There are several ways to help solve the problem.
The recommendations are as follows:
Caulk up old window frames. This is one of the main ways to eliminate heat leakage. This kind of work is not difficult, it takes a small amount of time. And its cost is minimal. As a result, drafts in the apartment will disappear.
Seal cracks in door frames. This method will reduce your electricity bill by 15 percent. It is recommended to do the same with the entrance door in the vestibule.
Background information: such measures increase thermal efficiency by 20%!
Finish the external walls of the apartment with foam plastic or mineral wool. If you have enough money, you can think about insulating your apartment in this way, too; this technique gives a noticeable effect. Just don’t forget about sealing the interpanel seams of the building.
How to behave when turning on the heating in the fall
In fact, even in the fall it is important to properly turn off the radiator. After you find out about the heating switch-on date, you need to take some actions. You remember that when you turn on the heating, only rust will pass through the pipes. That is why in this case it is recommended to close both taps at the same time, which will eliminate the possibility of clogging the battery.
It is enough to leave both taps closed for one day. And don’t worry if a sharp cold snap is predicted the next day: the water will not cool down so much that a vacuum begins to form in the battery. Then you can open both taps and leave it like that until the end of the heating season, when you need to turn off the radiator in the apartment again.
About turning off batteries for the summer
Any water heating system must be filled with coolant year-round.
Getting air inside as a result of its emptying will not lead to anything good - all steel elements will begin to actively corrode until the moisture leaves. Given the enclosed space, this will not happen soon, and the empty pipes will be covered with a layer of rust from the inside. In centralized systems, it is impossible to understand whether there is water in the batteries in the summer; one can only hope for the integrity of the relevant services. As practice shows, you only need to rely on yourself. Therefore, in order to extend the service life of heating devices and prevent them from emptying, you need to choose the right moment at the very end of the heating season and turn off the valve on the battery installed on the outlet pipe. In the event of some repair work on heating networks, workers can drain water from the riser, but it will not leave the closed radiator.
Advice. You don’t have to worry at all about whether you need to shut off the radiators in the summer when your apartment has heating appliances made of cast iron. Unlike other materials, cast iron is practically not subject to corrosion.
At the time of the autumn start-up of centralized heating, particles of dirt and rust move through the pipelines along with the coolant. Steel, aluminum and bimetallic batteries have small channel widths, which can become clogged quite quickly. So on the first day of launch, when you can hear the murmur of water in the pipes, you should not rush and open the taps. It is better to do this the next day, bleeding the air using the Mayevsky tap.
There is often a warning on the Internet that in the summer only one valve to the battery should be closed, two - under no circumstances. Some say that after cooling, the water will decrease in volume and a vacuum will form in the radiator, causing it to crack (an example is given of a plastic bottle without air). Others say that the rupture will occur due to chemical reactions in aluminum batteries and the release of oxygen in all others. Excessive pressure will appear, which will supposedly rupture the device.
Such statements have no basis. The lowest operating pressure is for cast iron batteries and is 9 Bar, the destruction pressure is even higher. Not a single chemical reaction of the coolant with any metal can create such excess pressure, but for aluminum radiators the limit is even higher - 16 Bar. The example with a vacuum does not stand up to criticism at all; if it suddenly forms, then the force of external influence on the walls of the battery will be 1 Atm, that is, 1 Bar.
Replacing the battery in winter
One of the frequently asked questions is whether it is possible to shut off the battery in winter? In general, this is prohibited. At the same time, it is technically possible. In any case, in winter it is recommended to turn off the batteries only if an emergency occurs, since this most often leads to the need to turn off the heating risers. However, there is an option in which you don’t have to turn off the heating risers. Then the radiators must be equipped with bypasses - specialized jumpers with taps. Thus, the access of water to the radiator will be blocked and, at the same time, will not disrupt the circulation of water in the system. (See also: How to choose heating radiators)
Remember that the battery is always filled with water
The battery is filled with liquid throughout the year. Water is drained only for a short time during centralized repair work. Therefore, if you plan to replace the battery, simply disconnecting it is not enough - you need to drain the water. Why is the system constantly filled with coolant? It is highly undesirable for oxygen to enter the heating system. When the water drains, air and water vapor take its place. This leads to active oxidation - that is, the appearance of rust on the surface of steel and bimetallic batteries. Oxygen dissolved in the coolant does not destroy the metal, i.e. does not lead to corrosion. Therefore, in order for the heating system to last a long time, it is always filled.
Tool preparation
Before replacing, you need to prepare a special tool:
- Adjustable wrench,
adjustable wrench
- "Bamka" key
"Bamka"
- Electric drill,
- Drill for working on concrete of the appropriate diameter,
- Angle grinder (“grinder”) with a diamond disc for processing metal surfaces,
Bulgarian
- Tape measure and folding meter,
- Construction pencil, which will be used for marking,
- Water level (“spirit level”).
Level
Important! If you are unable to reach an agreement with your neighbors above or below, you will need a tool, which is necessary for cutting threads. The external thread is cut on the pipe near the floor and under the ceiling.
Design features
The thermostat device is quite simple and consists of a thermal valve and a control element. Since, depending on the conditions, heating systems are installed with pipes of different diameters, thermostats are also produced for pipes of different diameters. As for the regulating element (thermostatic head), its dimensions are of a standard size, therefore they are suitable for regulators of any model, regardless of the manufacturer.
There are not so few models of valves and regulators, so before installing them, it is better to familiarize yourself with the available models, their design, and the principle of operation.
Disabling the heating riser
Problems associated with disconnecting the riser are often the most difficult to solve. When replacing heating batteries, the riser will need to be turned off for at least half a day. According to the law, the riser belongs to joint property.
Access to public property must be provided by the appropriate utility service, which has the necessary permits and is responsible if anything goes wrong.
Basement with taps
What does this mean in practice? It is necessary to write an application to the operational office. Based on this document, utility services are required to turn off the riser at the time specified in the application. By law, this is a paid service. This pleasure costs 15 – 20 US dollars.
You can negotiate cheaper with the chief engineer, foreman or one of the foremen. Local plumbers will turn off the risers. It will cost ten dollars.
Who makes idiots out of children? Inclusion with the most unexpected...
Recently, complaints from parents from different cities have become more frequent that, due to poor performance at school, children are sent to psychological and medical commissions.
There they are often given psychiatric diagnoses, which subsequently have a huge impact on the child’s entire future life. This is a trend of modern times, since a previously unsuccessful child is, rather, simply a signal for more attentive work by the teacher and parents. And for some reason the curriculum was designed in such a way that... Discussion
For 9 years, not to contact any independent psychiatrist and find out whether the child really has a disease or not!!?!. If not, take the appropriate conclusion and silence any blatherings from academic achievement advocates with this conclusion. My mother there was just like a small child (they told me there, they recommended me there, they transferred me from there...) Before I had children, I was very flexible, compliant, and in conflicts I was inclined to give in. But now, when defending the interests of children, an iron grip, confidence and even arrogance comes from somewhere.
Was it that in the Soviet school they didn’t send you to correctional school? Ha! They sent it and didn’t ask the parents much. Now everything is “recommendatory”, any inadequate person must be taught until he is blue in the face, if the parents don’t want it, you won’t get anyone out of the public school.
Crimping
When the heating is turned on (at the beginning of the water supply to the network), the plumber should be near the tap in the basement in order to quickly shut off the water supply in case of an emergency. The procedure for supplying coolant under pressure into the system is called “pressure testing”. At the same time, the integrity of the heating system is checked.
When performing pressure testing, special equipment is used: a pressure gauge and a pump, which creates pressure. If the pressure in the system does not drop when coolant is supplied, then there is no leak in the network. If the pressure drops noticeably over time, it means that the tightness of the system is broken, and it is necessary to find damage to the lines and heating devices.
Crimping
If you need to shut off and remove the radiator
It is best to carry out work related to radiator removal after the end of the heating season. If work needs to be carried out during the heating season, you need to take into account a number of nuances. If you have a single-pipe heating system and vertical wiring, you can remove the battery only if there is a bypass.
Such a system can be identified by pipes, one of which comes from the ceiling and connects to the radiator, and the other comes out of the radiator and disappears into the floor. A bypass is a jumper connecting the incoming and outgoing pipes. This is a pipe of approximately the same or slightly smaller diameter than the main pipes. The principle of the bypass is as follows: if the radiator is turned off, water begins to flow through the riser, passing through the bypass, without passing through the battery. In this case, the riser works, the heating in neighboring apartments does not turn off.
If the system is two-pipe, if there are taps, it is enough to close them, after which you can remove the battery.
Independent shutdown of risers
In small towns, it is quite common to turn off the heating on your own.
The riser is turned off by a valve in the basement, where it connects to the so-called sun lounger. Water valves are usually in plain sight. To find fittings to shut off heating, you must either have technical documentation or an experienced plumber who is familiar with city local communications.
As a rule, the heating system is closed with an old brass Soviet valve or valve.
Heating tap in the basement
Features of thermostat installation
- The thermostat must not be placed in the area of rising currents of warm air that arise above an operating radiator;
- The connection diagram for the thermostat stipulates that it must be raised above the floor level by at least 800 mm;
- It must be protected from direct sunlight;
- The remote sensor, if available, must be firmly fixed to the wall;
- Do not block access to the thermostat with furniture or curtains for heat flows generated in the room.
After the end of the heating season, the thermostat should be switched to maximum flow mode (open) to avoid the appearance of deposits on the valve seat.
What else you should know
If you are wondering how to turn off the battery if there is no tap, then there is a solution here too. True, the option of blocking the riser is inevitable here. In this case, not only the individual battery will be blocked, but also part of the heating system. In small cities, the practice of turning off the heating independently is often used, just by shutting off the riser. It is turned off using a valve in the basement. At that point he approaches the sun lounger. Water valves are usually within sight.
You can find out which fittings are suitable for shutting off the heating in the technical documentation. Additionally, this should be known to an experienced plumber who is familiar with local utilities. In most cases, the heating system is shut off using a brass valve or a valve.
In the event that the window sill blocks the battery, there is no single solution. It all depends on the degree of overlap. So, for example, if the window sill completely blocked the battery, then this is considered unacceptable. This is explained by the concept of convection, in which warm air rises. There it replaces cold air, which goes down, after which it is heated by the battery. Thus, the room is heated. If the window sill completely blocks the radiator, then the convection process is hampered and the room does not warm up well. But there will definitely be a way out of this situation. You can make several rectangular holes in the window sill and cover them with decorative grilles.
- So, shutting off the batteries in an apartment is possible and, in some cases, even necessary. This can be most conveniently accomplished with special taps.
- After the end of the heating season, it is recommended to close one of them and leave the second open.
- On the day of heating, we close both taps for 1-2 days so that rusty water flows and eliminates the possibility of blockages.
- If there is no tap, then you will have to shut off the riser using a special valve or valve, which are most often located in the basement of the building, and usually in a visible place.
The main thing is to do everything thoughtfully and strictly in accordance with all standards and requirements. Do not close both taps at the end of the heating season, this may cause deformation and cracks in them. Do not forget about the basic rules that will help you shut off the battery in your apartment safely and correctly.
Do I need to shut off the radiators while cleaning the system?
To ensure radiators have a long service life, when flushing the system by the management company, a number of conditions must be observed. These include:
- New batteries should be covered for the first 2 years after installation, as they are still quite clean. In this case, washing can only clog them. It will be possible to open the shut-off valves a couple of days after the completion of the work, after all the precipitation has gone away.
- Flush radiators yourself at least once every 2 years. This should be done with running hot water.
Instructions for cleaning batteries yourself:
- cover the bathtub with oilcloth;
- put a thick cloth on top;
- close all shut-off valves;
- remove the radiator;
- remove all gaskets;
- rinse the battery with a strong stream of hot water (you can use a shower hose);
- install the radiator, not forgetting to return all gaskets to their place.
Tips and tricks
Experts recommend using the following devices during the heating period to close heating devices:
- Ball Valves;
- bypass;
- drain;
- thermostat;
- device for eliminating gas residues.
To shut off the radiator in your home and avoid adverse consequences, the best solution is to call emergency services. If an accident occurs, you should not panic; you need to turn off the heating. For these purposes, the design of existing overlapping devices and the location of their installation are being studied.
Knowing how to turn off the heating in an apartment, you can decide how to prepare for the heating period in the summer. The installation of bypass and ball valves is carried out by specialists who will shut off the water inside the riser.
Why is the water not drained at the end of the heating period?
As everyone knows, water remains in heating networks even in summer. This can be explained by the fact that the processes associated with corrosion in the middle of heating devices and pipelines are similarly reduced. And water itself will help remove corrosion, because in such a case steel and cast iron will be much less prone to rust. As surprising as this may sound, it is actually true. Why is this happening? Everything is very simple: (See also: How to disassemble a cast iron heating battery with your own hands)
Water is regularly found in the middle of heating systems and does not allow metal to come into contact with air. Corrosion occurs when a metal comes into contact with dissolved oxygen present in the water mass; Due to the isolation of the heating system from the outside world, the water is quickly deprived of dissolved oxygen. Then the oxidation process, which in most cases is considered a catalyst for corrosion processes, is completely eliminated. As a result of all this, the heating network is absolutely resistant to corrosion inside, which cannot be said about the hot and cold water piping system. However, for example, if water is removed from the system, moist air with a high oxygen content remains. Actually, this explains why pipes and batteries become covered with rust inside in the absence of a coolant. (See also: How to calculate bimetallic radiators)
Before closing the heating battery, you need to learn the other side. According to the necessary standards, the heating network must always contain water. At the same time, some management organizations often do not take this requirement into account to save money. So, during repairs, it is necessary to drain water from the system, and then refill the network with it, wasting time. If batteries are replaced and repaired in several apartments over the course of one summer, the management company will need to drain and refill the system each time. Thanks to this, in most cases the pipes are left completely without water during the summer. Due to the closed system, the pipes will not be able to dry inside, and moisture will trigger processes that are associated with corrosion.
The right approach to covering
Owners of private houses do not have to worry about repair work or emergency situations, because they have an individual heating system. It is much more difficult for people in apartment buildings. It is especially difficult where vertically installed single-pipe systems are located. After all, during any work with heating devices, this process immediately affects the neighbors. That is why it is important to properly turn off the radiator in the apartment without harming others.
During the heating season, interference with the operation of the central systems of the house is not allowed. As an exception, shutdown is permitted in cases of emergency leaks or leaks. But if the batteries are connected to the common system correctly, then they can be turned off during the heating season without disturbing the neighbors.
This is possible if the battery connection diagram is made using two taps, as well as a bypass line. When the devices are connected in this way, the sequence of work on the ceiling is simple. First you need to turn off both taps, and after carrying out the necessary work, open them again.
If the house is hot, but you don’t want to open the window in order to save money, then you can turn off the radiator for a while. In this case, it would be better to install thermostats on batteries. With their help you can maintain a certain temperature in the room.
If connected correctly, the heating battery can be turned off at any time, be it summer or winter. To do this, the tap and valve, which are located at the pipe insertion into the collector itself, must be closed. They overlap clockwise, in other words, to the right. However, do not forget about the other residents of the house. They must be warned about the closure in advance, and a sign must be placed on the valve so that no one can open it during the repair work.
As can be seen from the above, it is possible to turn off the heating when the piping scheme is done correctly, or in the event of an accident.
In case of emergency
If an emergency occurs and water begins to flood the room, then the situation must be saved. In such a situation, you don’t need to think about anything, but only about shutting off the water in any way. Since in such a situation the neighbors who are located below may also suffer.
With a very small leak, there will be enough time to call a locksmith. If an emergency situation can lead to a flood, then actions must be quick and concentrated. First you need to turn off the taps located on the connections to the batteries. This must be done even without a bypass. If there are no shut-off valves, then you need to call professionals and, if possible, close the riser before they arrive. To do this, you need to go down to the basement and find a shut-off point, that is, two vertical pipes, and shut off.
For the summer
When shutting off the heating battery for the summer, you need to know that every system with water heating must be filled with water all year round. After all, if there is no water in the pipes, then air will get in, resulting in corrosion. In multi-apartment building systems, it is impossible to check the state of affairs, so you can only hope for the conscientious attitude towards the work of utility service employees.
However, you can do something yourself to save your heating system from damage. To extend the life of the batteries, you need to close the valve on the radiator yourself at the end of the heating season. In this case, utility workers, carrying out any repair work, can drain water from the system, and at the same time water will not be able to leave the radiators.
If the radiators are made of cast iron, then you do not need to worry about overlapping, because this material is not afraid of corrosion. When the heating system starts up in the fall, there is no need to rush to open the tap immediately on the first day. It is better to wait and open on the second day, while bleeding the air using the Mayevsky tap. This is done to prevent the pipes from becoming clogged with rust that moves through the pipes.
Some sources say that in the summer the radiator valve must be closed. This is done so that the water, having decreased in volume after cooling, does not form a vacuum in the battery. However, this statement is incorrect. Even if the water cools down, it does not damage the battery.
Under different conditions
Very often there is a control valve on the inlet pipe. Using it, you can block the pipe by turning it so that it is perpendicular to the pipe. But still, the main task of the valve is to maintain the desired temperature in the room.
If there is no valve, but there are shut-off valves, that is, ball valves, then you can shut off the heating radiators at any time. At the same time, you don’t need to worry that it could harm one of your neighbors. You only need to turn the valve at the inlet and outlet of the pipes. This will stop the flow of water through the radiators.
Such overlap can be done in the following situations:
- if necessary, paint them during the heating season;
- when to flush the radiator;
- if necessary, replace any gasket;
- when closure is required for the summer season;
- to cover and remove the battery.
If there is a need to remove the radiator, it is better to do this at the end of winter, that is, after the heating season is over. Since during the heating season, this can only be done if there is a bypass. In addition, this is done only in two cases: when replacing the radiator with a new one and for emergency repairs. Indeed, according to current laws, any repair work is strictly prohibited during the heating season, except in emergency situations.
But if something urgent does happen, then you need to do all the necessary work to correct the problem quickly. In this case, it is best to replace the radiator with a new one so that your neighbors do not suffer from subsequent breakdowns. If the apartment had a cast iron battery, then it can be replaced with a bimetallic one. But at the same time, the mounting brackets must also be dismantled and others installed.
List of situations when this is necessary
Even in the absence of any natural disasters or serious problems, there are many situations when it is imperative to turn off the heating radiator.
Here are the most relevant ones:
- daylight saving time;
- inspection before the opening of the heating season;
- replacement and repair of radiators;
- emergency situation;
- if the room is too hot.
Heating in the apartment
We will consider heating in an apartment based on this picture:
I specifically gave two options, since some may have a tap on the jumper, while others may not. You can read more about the jumper (or bypass) with the tap in the article: Heating diagram. Do you need a bypass valve? And now we will talk about something else.
Here comes winter, we turned on the battery, opened the jumper and our house is warm and dry... Beauty! The battery, as they say, is spitting! But sooner or later winter ends, and in our front staircase we see an announcement about turning off the heating. What should we do with the battery?

Energy consumption for a bypass pipe with a thermostat
Installing a thermostat has a beneficial effect on energy costs. Compared with a conventional flow pipe, in a system with a bypass pipe, hot water consumption is reduced by 30-35%, and heat transfer from the radiator is reduced by 10%. This is of no small importance when there is excess heat in the heating system, that is, when the apartment is hot. This indicates the effectiveness of the system using a bypass for creating comfortable conditions in the room, and payments for energy consumption are significantly reduced.

Choosing a thermostat for a heating radiator
Are the windows in your apartment open even in extreme cold?
Can't achieve the optimal indoor temperature? Then this article is addressed specifically to you. In order to regulate the temperature in the radiator, and also ensure the uninterrupted and safe operation of the heating system, several types of protective and control units are used. Before you purchase a thermostat for a radiator that has various reviews on the Internet, let's look at the main types of these devices, the principle of operation, technical characteristics and the correctness of their use.
Main types:
- ball valve - manual cone valve - automatic regulator or thermostat
A ball valve performs only two main functions: open and closed. Whatever the position of the tap, your heating radiator may become depressurized. Therefore, the operation of the ball valve will be ineffective.
A manual cone valve regulates temperature much more reliably than a ball valve. It may not be completely covered. But using such a valve will require your constant presence and attention.
How does a manual cone valve work?:
We twist the mechanism, activating the valve stem. But, if the valve constantly opens and closes, its protective cap can be damaged, i.e. damage the entire device.
The most optimal thermostat option in our time is considered to be an automatic thermostat for a heating radiator.
In automatic devices, the temperature valve functions in conjunction with the radiator thermal head and quickly responds even to minor temperature fluctuations. As the temperature drops, the liquid in the thermal cartridge narrows, the valve stem extends, the flow of water from the heating system increases, and the temperature rises.
If, on the contrary, it is very hot in your house, the automatic device of the device will independently start the reverse process, and the air temperature will begin to drop.
Temperature controllers receive a signal to the thermostat component from various sources:
- water from the heating system - indoor air - outdoor air
The simplest thermostats for a radiator received a signal only from water and regulated the temperature in the range from 1 to 6 degrees. Modern thermostats are not only fast-acting, but also able to regulate the flow of water in pipes. They automatically create and maintain the required temperature in the house.
There are two types of thermostats for registers:
Let's consider the structure and features of the functioning of a mechanical thermostat .
Its main components:
- thermostatic valve - sensing element - thermostatic element - detachable connection - spool - union nut - rod - compensation mechanism - retaining ring - temperature setting scale
The valve on the mechanical type radiator has a scale, according to the numbers on which the desired temperature regime is set.

- sunlight - draft during ventilation - outside air temperature - presence of other heat sources nearby
Thermal operating modes of a mechanical thermostat:
1. + 7 gr. - frost protection
2. + 11 gr. - room corridor
3. + 16 gr. - Bedroom
4. + 20 gr. - hall or large room
5. + 24 gr. - bathroom
6. + 28 gr. — summer mode
Mechanical thermostats are designed for both single-pipe and two-pipe heating systems. The thermostat for one-pipe systems is built in only if there is a special jumper in the pipe, the so-called bypass.
The thermostat is installed on the radiator itself, if the radiator is not covered with anything. If you have a thermostat with an air temperature sensor, place the device at a short distance from the valve (up to 1cm). You can also install it in the radiator cap itself. To set the thermostat, turn off the water, drain it, then get to work.
What needs to be done:
- cut the pipe at a certain distance from the radiator and remove it
— it is better to dismantle the ball valve in front of the radiator
— insert the shanks from the caps into the radiator plugs
- connect the distribution pipes
To adjust the operation of our device, you need to close the vents, doors, and windows. Don't let warm air escape from your home. Place a regular thermometer in the room where the thermostat is installed. Open the regulator valve all the way.
When the air temperature rises by 6 degrees, close the valve. When you hear the sound of coolant entering the radiator, the valve will heat up. Remember what position the valve head is in at this moment. This way, you can configure the equipment yourself.
If the thermostat is installed in a place covered by furniture or curtains, then its operation will be ineffective. If it is not possible to place the device in another location, use remote control sensors with a clip-on sensing element.
It is entirely justified to purchase a mini-regulator, which, as practice shows, is not inferior in properties to classic thermostats.
Some “professionals” install a special shut-off valve in the system, placing it on the back side of the radiator. In this case, it is not difficult to dismantle or clean the battery without turning off the system. When the heating season comes to an end, the thermostat must be opened by turning it counterclockwise.
Another type of thermostats for radiators is electronic thermostats , based on an automatic operating principle. Electronic thermostats maintain the desired temperature in the heating system and automatically control the mixer, valves, and pumps.
A special temperature sensor is built into the electronic thermostat or installed externally, which transmits information to the device about the state of the temperature of the room in which it is located.
Electronic thermostat for radiator
— with open logic — with closed logic
In everyday life, thermostats with closed logic are more often used. Open logic thermostats are used in industrial production.
Thermostats are not only liquid, but also gas-filled.
Gas-filled thermostats respond faster to room temperature fluctuations, because... their functioning is not related to water temperature. Such thermostats quickly respond to the dynamics of temperature changes, which contributes to a more efficient supply of heat.
Please note that when using a thermostat, much greater results can only be achieved when the device is first installed in rooms with large temperature fluctuations, for example, in the kitchen.
So, open windows and vents are left behind, since you have purchased a much-needed thermostat for your heating radiator.
Advantages of modern thermostats:
— simply installed into the system, requiring no maintenance or preventative maintenance
— operating range from 5 to 28 degrees
— they ensure uniform distribution of coolant throughout the system
- there is no excessive increase in air temperature in the room
— savings of about 25% are provided
- the microclimate of the room is significantly improved

Thermal heads for heating radiators.
A device that allows you to regulate the temperature of heating radiators is called a thermal head. This is not the only name for this device; there are also: battery thermostat, thermostatic head, battery temperature controller, radiator thermostat, radiator thermostat and others. Let's talk in more detail about this device.

The design and principle of operation of a thermal head for a heating radiator.
The thermostatic head can only be used in conjunction with a thermostatic valve. The thermostatic valve refers to shut-off and control valves and, using a thermal head, can regulate or shut off fluid flows in the system.
Construction of a thermostatic heating head and thermostatic valve.
The ambient temperature near the thermal head affects the state of the substance in the bellows. By decreasing or increasing in volume, the substance affects the position of the pressure rod and thereby regulates the volume of coolant entering the radiator. When the air temperature in the room rises, the substance in the bellows begins to expand, squeezing out the rod, which in turn reduces the cross-section of the channel, and the volume of coolant entering the radiator is reduced. When the temperature drops, the opposite process occurs: the substance in the bellows is compressed, due to which the rod rises, increasing the cross-section of the channel, and the volume of incoming coolant increases.
The opening and closing of the stem is facilitated by two stainless steel springs: one returns the stem after closing the valve, the other after opening.
It is IMPORTANT to remember that for the thermal head to function properly, it must be periodically cleaned of dust and dirt. Please remember that cleaning agents and abrasives should not be used for cleaning.

Is it worth turning off heating appliances?
Attention! Ball valves cannot be used to regulate the flow of coolant if you want to reduce the heating of the batteries! This valve is a shut-off valve; its use for other purposes leads to destruction of the valve and leaks.
Based on the above, if there is no bypass, but ball valves are installed, the battery can be dismantled independently for repair or replacement, but not during the heating season.
Heater with installed bypass
The bypass (jumper) is mounted parallel to the radiator and is usually a pipe whose diameter is equal to the diameter of the supply pipes or one step smaller. If you plan to shut off the radiators after the heating season or install a radiator with a thermostat, be sure to take care of installing a bypass. Otherwise, your actions will lower the temperature of the coolant and your neighbors.
Is it possible to shut off by closing both taps?
Let's imagine that you closed both taps while the coolant in the system is still hot.
Knowing the elementary laws of physics, you can easily understand that
:
- As the water in the battery cools, its volume will decrease;
- This will lead to the formation of a vacuum in the enclosed space of the radiator;
- As a result of the resulting pressure, the battery will become deformed or lose its seal and will need to be replaced.
So, in search of an answer to the question of how to turn off the battery if it gets hot in the apartment, you already know that this should under no circumstances be done by closing both taps! Now it remains to figure out whether it is worth using both taps after the heating season, when the coolant has already cooled down.
As we already know, the central heating system stays full all year round. In some areas, the coolant is drained if repair work is required, and then refilled. So there is liquid inside your radiator.
If you turn off both the upper and lower valves, the following happens:
:
- Various chemical processes take place in the liquid inside the battery, since the coolant cannot be chemically pure;
- As a result of these processes, gas formation occurs;
- Since the gases have no way to escape, the increased pressure may cause the radiator to depressurize.
Thus, if an air vent (Mayevsky tap) is not installed on the battery, it is strictly not recommended to close both shut-off valves, even if the coolant temperature is room temperature.
