The flue gases in the chimney duct should not be very cool. Therefore, they try to build the chimney into the masonry of the internal wall of the house or attach it to the wall. Sections of the chimney that pass through an unheated room (attic) or outside the house are insulated with mineral wool .

A brick chimney serves reliably and for a long time only at high flue gas temperatures,

which prevents condensation from forming in the pipe. As a rule, this condition is met when the chimney is operated with a conventional solid fuel boiler.

When working with modern gas or liquid fuel boilers, as well as with solid fuel pyrolysis boilers, pellet and others, operating for a long time in a slow burning mode of low intensity, the brick chimney is destroyed quite quickly.

Modern boilers are designed so that the exhaust gases have a fairly low temperature. As a result, condensation of water vapor contained in the flue gases occurs in the chimney. The pipe walls are constantly moistened. In addition, when combining with other combustion products, water forms aggressive chemical compounds on the inner surface of the pipe.

In particular, the exhaust gases of boilers contain sulfur, which, interacting with water, forms sulfuric acid in the chimney, which corrodes its walls. External signs of destruction are dark wet spots on the outer surface of the brick pipe.

The operating mode of a solid fuel pyrolysis boiler also contributes to the formation of aggressive condensate in the chimney, which quickly destroys the brick chimney.

Rough chimney walls contribute to the accumulation of solid soot particles on them. The roughness of the walls and the rectangular shape of the chimney duct make it difficult to clean the chimney from deposits.

To connect gas and other boilers with low exhaust gas temperatures to a brick chimney, an insert must be placed in the brick channel - a steel or ceramic chimney pipe .

Application

The practical application of all existing varieties of refractory or stove bricks is somewhat broader than just stove or fireplace masonry.

However, the most common areas for construction from this type of material are:

  • all parts of buildings associated with contact with fire or heat, that is, both directly furnace or smelting, and chimney and external elements, in all possible areas, from steel production furnaces to forges, from stoves in houses to barbecue stations;

all buildings necessary for firing any products, from small production of clay souvenirs to industrial production of porcelain;

construction of walls in areas with a hot and dry climate, with very rare precipitation, and so on.

It is worth mentioning separately about the inappropriate use of stove bricks - this brick is absolutely not intended for the construction of foundations or houses in general, since frequent contact with humidity negatively affects fireclay, that is, a brick with fire-resistant properties located in the ground layer is destroyed many times faster than a simple one silicate or ordinary red.

There is only one exception to this rule - climate. But even in deserts it is impossible to build foundations from stove material, but walls are absolutely necessary, since fireclay is most consistent with the actual living conditions in this climate.

As for the laying of stove bricks for their intended purpose, it has several specific features, the main one of which is the selection of mortar. Ordinary building cement composition can only be used in the foundation of a stove, fireplace or garden brazier.

All those parts of the building that will be subject to temperature changes, that is, directly from fire, and heat from flames, and smoke, should be fastened with special compounds, since the cement will quickly crack, rendering the entire building unusable.

For the fireplace and chimney made of brick, an adhesive clay mortar must be used that has the same characteristics as the stove building brick itself. Such mixtures are sold ready-made, in dry form, packaged similarly to cement and other construction “powders”.

The following types of solutions for working with refractory materials are commercially produced:

  • limestone pure;
  • clay clean;
  • lime cement (suitable only for laying part of the foundation);
  • lime gypsum;
  • lime-clay (universal composition suitable for use in all parts of a future stove, fireplace or any other building);
  • clay cement (similar to “lime cement”, use is permissible only in the foundation).

If desired, you can make the mixture for the mortar yourself using clay chips, sand, clay and lime, however, it is quite difficult to calculate the correct proportions and ratios without serious practical experience in working with stove materials.

A number of parameters influence how thick the adhesive mortar should be, one of which is the weight of the kiln brick. If you do not have sufficient experience, then it would be more advisable not to mix something yourself, but to purchase a ready-made construction mixture and use it in strict accordance with the instructions on the package.

A chimney made of ceramic pipes is a universal solution for a boiler in a private house


Chimneys made from special ceramic chimney pipes can be used for all types of boilers.

The material is resistant to high temperatures and to any aggressive chemical compounds that can form in the chimney during the combustion of different types of fuel.
This type of chimney is the most durable.
Ceramic chimney pipes are distinguished by the permissible maximum temperature of the exhaust gases.

For solid fuel boilers

Pipes with a permissible flue gas temperature of 600-650 °C should be used, resistant to the combustion of soot deposits in the pipe and designed to operate in a dry state.

Ceramic chimney design

The chimney is assembled from individual elements - ceramic pipes 600 - 1000 mm long, which are connected to each other using shaped parts at the ends and acid-resistant adhesive mastic.

  • shell made of concrete block modules with ventilation ducts and holes for vertical reinforcement.

You can make a chimney from modular sandwich pipes in 3 ways:

The first option is suitable for ready-made houses of any type - frame, brick, log. Your task is to place the boiler against the outer wall, take the sandwich outside, and then secure the main pipe. In terms of financial and labor costs, this is the most profitable way to install a chimney.

Installing a modular system according to the second scheme is much more difficult. In a one-story house, you will have to go through the ceiling and roof slope, arranging fireproof cuts. In a two-story house, the piping will get inside the room and make you think about decorative cladding. But you won’t need to go around the roof overhang and secure the end of the chimney with guy wires.

How to choose the right chimney for a boiler in a private house?

These parameters depend on the type of heating boiler and the type of fuel used. The chimney is selected according to the following parameters:

  • Based on the temperature of the exhaust flue gases. The nominal operating temperature of the chimney should not be less than the temperature of the boiler exhaust gases in normal operation.
  • Based on gas pressure in the chimney.

Chimneys are divided into three classes of corrosion resistance to sulfur compounds: 1 - class, chimneys for removing combustion products of gas fuel; 2 - class, chimneys for boilers using wood and liquid fuel with a sulfur content of up to 0.2%; 3 - class, chimneys for boilers burning coal, peat and liquid fuel with a sulfur content of more than 0.2%.
  • According to the resistance to fire of soot accumulation in the chimney.
    Chimneys may or may not be resistant to the combustion of soot in the chimney. When soot accumulations burn, the temperature in the chimney can briefly rise to 1000 °C.
  • According to the permissible distance to combustible structures.
    Combustible structures in the house must be located from the outer shell of the chimney at a distance no closer than specified in the technical documentation for the flue, or additionally protected from exposure to high temperatures.

Manufacturers are required to label each element of the chimney system. According to European Union standards, symbols (letters and numbers) indicate all the main parameters: exhaust gas temperature, gas pressure class, condensate resistance, corrosion resistance class, soot ignition resistance, permissible distance to combustible materials.

The chimney must ensure the removal of a certain amount of gases from the boiler per unit time. The movement of gas in a pipe can be forced, with mechanical stimulation, or natural - under the influence of traction forces.
