What can you say about the quality of the gas boiler Wolf CGG-1K-24?

The German company Wolf is not considered a reference manufacturer, like Vaillant and Viessmann, but it fully justifies German quality standards. Gas boilers have an efficient and reliable design, rarely cause problems and, with proper maintenance, will usually operate without problems for over 15 years.

In the article we will look at the best models of Wolf gas wall-mounted and floor-standing boilers, how they behave in practice, what advantages and, most importantly, disadvantages are noted by the owners, as well as what malfunctions may arise during the operation of boiler units in real conditions.

About the manufacturer

WOLF GmbH has been producing heating equipment for more than 40 years and has established itself as a high-quality and reliable German brand. The company is represented on the Russian market as Wolf Energy Saving Systems LLC. Not so long ago, purchasing boilers was done at your own peril and risk, because installation and maintenance specialists were only in Moscow. However, in recent years the service structure has developed very rapidly; today you can count on high-quality service in large regions. In general, many often note the excellent work of the hotline.

Gas boilers of this brand rarely cause problems; they have a classic design with a closed combustion chamber. Burners are modulating, heat exchangers are copper. More budget models are somewhat noisy, while more expensive ones make virtually no noise during operation. All models are equipped with automatic equipment with self-diagnosis and all modern safety systems: protection against overheating and freezing, stopping the circulation pump, auto-ignition, and a water filter.

The device using the Wolf CGG-1K-24 as an example. Typical layout, copper pipes and threaded connections, all insulated and assembled. There is a layer of thermal insulation.

A well-known drawback of almost the entire model range is the lack of a programmer, which is not uncommon among analogues in this price segment. It is possible to connect external control, but almost all boilers only support control via the eBus protocol. This means that you need to buy only a branded control unit, at a considerable cost, which is not justified for all consumers.

It cannot be said that Wolf boilers are sensitive to voltage changes, but we still recommend connecting them through a voltage stabilizer. If a breakdown occurs, then most often it is the failure of the electronic board due to a voltage drop. Otherwise, all gas models can be called practically problem-free; there are quite a few cases of service calls in comparison with many analogues. The price of even budget models is quite high, but typical for boilers of this category from any manufacturer.

Reviews

CGG-1K 24: Victor E., Tolyatti

I doubted the choice. I have heard little about this brand, there are practically no advertisements. I'm happy with the work. Simple, economical, works quietly. Inside each device there are stickers indicating the number and country of manufacture. I recommend buying a single-circuit device with a boiler in addition. Regardless of the pressure in the pipes and the number of times the tap is opened, there is always stable hot water. The boiler recirculates, so there is no need to wait for cold water to run through. I have a 110 liter boiler - you can take a bath, and there is no cooling, since the water quickly heats up.

CGG-1K 24: Natalya G., Engels

There are no advantages. Service too. After a year of installation, the boiler remains untuned. At minimum, the water is heated to 55 degrees - not even suitable for washing dishes, let alone for a bath and shower. The service department set it up according to the heating area. At first the water was too hot, they called a technician and they reset it, and this happened several times. As a result, we were once again unable to connect the module and turned to the importer. The issue has not yet been resolved.

Wolf heaters are some of the best on the world market. Thanks to the variety of models and a wide range of capacities, every consumer can find a suitable option to suit their needs. Among other things, the company can change the configuration at the request of the client.

Owner reviews of Wolf gas boilers: advantages and disadvantages

Many features depend on the model, since it is impossible to generalize the entire model range. However, after analyzing the experience of installation and operation, and many reviews from owners, we have identified general advantages and disadvantages that apply to each model.

AdvantagesFlaws
Efficient design with efficiency from 90%. Excellent, average performance of the DHW circuit Relatively high cost
Reliability and durability, high-quality materials and assembly. With proper maintenance and coolant quality, problems during operation are rare in the first 15 years Small selection of floor models
All models are equipped with modern security systemsThe external control of most models only supports the eBUS protocol; the proprietary control unit is much more expensive than third-party analogues
The permissible operating pressure of 3 bar allows the boiler to be installed in systems of two- and three-story private housesBudget models are relatively noisy
Owners often note that more expensive models operate silentlyAbsence of low-power models with heating capacity less than 18 kW
More expensive models are equipped with multifunctional automation and Wi-Fi controlThe service structure is still not developed in absolutely all regions
Developed service structure, excellent hotline support

The best and most famous models: characteristics and prices

Wall mounted

FGG-K-24

The most budget model in the line of gas boilers and one of the most successful for its price. This is a convection double-circuit boiler with a closed combustion chamber. The primary heat exchanger is copper - more resistant to corrosion and more thermally conductive. Maximum gas consumption is 2.1 m3/hour. Equipped with a built-in expansion tank. The average performance of the DHW circuit is 11.4 l/min, which is enough for 2-3 points of consumption.

The manufacturer claims stable operation when the network voltage drops to 160 V and the pressure in the DHW circuit to 0.5 bar. However, problems with electronic board failure still occur. Also, in severe frosts, the boiler often displays error E51, which indicates insufficient draft. Most often this happens due to ice on the chimney head. This is the only boiler in the Wolf range that works with the OpenTherm protocol, which most third-party room thermostats work with. Perhaps the only drawback, besides the lack of a built-in programmer, is the limited power selection. The model is available only in a version with a heating capacity of 24 kW.

How to choose a room thermostat and save up to 30% per month on heating

CGG-1K

It has almost the same design structure as the FGG-K, differing only in a few points. Firstly, there are different controls, the expansion tank is 2 liters larger, slightly larger in size and quieter. Secondly, it is possible to work not only on natural gas, but also on liquefied gas. Thirdly, there is a version with not only 24, but also 28 kW. This is one of the few models assembled directly in Germany.

Otherwise, it is the same double-circuit mounted gas boiler with a closed combustion chamber. However, due to the almost 2 times higher cost, we consider this model not the best solution, inferior in terms of price-quality ratio to other models in the Wolf line of gas boilers.

FGB

Condensing single-circuit gas boiler with a closed combustion chamber. The condensation principle of operation involves additional heat extraction from exhaust gas condensate, which significantly increases efficiency (but at the same time, the cost of the design). Efficiency – 110%, primary heat exchanger – copper, can operate on both natural and liquefied gas (models with the “K” prefix). Due to the condensation principle of operation, the boiler is free of the well-known problem of poor draft due to ice on the chimney; at a lower temperature of the exhaust gases it does not form.

The boiler is equipped with all modern protection systems and a water filter. With an optional interface module, control via a smartphone is possible. Apart from the cost, the boiler has no disadvantages. The only known problem is the failure of the ignition electrode; the boiler must be regularly maintained and cleaned. Available in power versions: 24, 28, 35 kW.

All operating features and selection criteria for condensing gas boilers

CGG-3K

The most modern double-circuit model of the 3rd generation, one of the best Wolf gas boilers for heating a private home. It is highly efficient, efficiency – 92.2%. The heat exchanger is copper, the burner is modulating, water-cooled: a rather rare technology for cooling the return line with coolant, which reduces its wear. In general, the boiler design is focused on the most gentle, resource-efficient operating mode. However, due to the novelty of the model, statistical data on reliability are not available.

DHW productivity is 11.7 l/min, which is higher than the market average. Owners often note the absolutely silent operation of the boiler (only 38 dB, which is quieter than the average air conditioner or fan). Among the shortcomings, again, the basic configuration lacks an important programmer, which is available in many analogues in this price segment. Organization of programming of the boiler operation for the next day or week, as well as weather-dependent control, is implemented only through the proprietary Link Pro module, the cost of which is about 30 thousand rubles. Over the years of presence on the market, no serious service calls are known. Also an advantage is the availability of a low-power version with an output of 18 kW. In total, the boiler is available in versions with heating capacity: 18, 24 and 28 kW.

Floor-standing

MGK-2

Today, Wolf’s selection of floor-standing gas boilers is small and this is the only unique model worthy of attention. The single-circuit condensing MGK-2 is designed for heating large private houses or commercial premises, since the power of the least efficient version is 130 kW. The boiler design is designed for maximum service life: modulating burner with a range from 17%, durable aluminum-silicon heat exchanger, closed combustion chamber. The permissible operating pressure is 6 bar; it can operate on both natural and liquefied gas.

Automation already in the basic configuration allows you to control the boiler via a smartphone, all security systems and automatic ignition are present. Installers note the ease of combining several boilers in a cascade and controlling them from one unit. With enormous power, it is worth noting the almost silent, very quiet operation. Available in versions with a power of 130-1,000 kW.

Cost: from 490,000 rub.

Features of operation and management

Double-circuit boilers combine two functions. It is convenient and profitable, and their price is relatively low. It happens that they are even used in houses with a centralized water supply - this turns out to be more profitable than paying bills for hot water consumption.

Both floor-mounted and wall-mounted boilers are convenient and reliable. The installation method does not in any way affect their operation or characteristics. Wall-mounted units are more compact, and floor-mounted units have greater heat output.

Despite the wide functionality, Wolf boilers have extremely simple, intuitive controls. It’s not difficult to understand its nuances, but if some points are not clear, there are instructions that explain everything in detail. Adjusting the parameters allows you to choose the optimal mode - modern gas appliances themselves maintain the temperature set by the user, without requiring constant attention. Its stability is maintained by a thermostat - it is connected to a sensor located in the heated room.

Automatic system control

All modern heaters, including Wolf, automatically maintain a comfortable temperature even in the absence of the owners. Despite the multi-stage security system and automation, the device requires control by third parties - neighbors or relatives. If, for example, an emergency shutdown occurs, the heating system may fail. There are many reasons for disconnection:

  • The network voltage has dropped;
  • The electricity went out;
  • The cross-section of the chimney has decreased due to ice;
  • Gas pressure has dropped;
  • The burner went out due to the wind.

In each of these situations, certain actions must be taken.

Maintenance and service

Any gas equipment requires regular maintenance, namely:

  • Fault diagnosis;
  • Checking the gas pressure level and network voltage;
  • Cleaning the burner and chamber;
  • Checking the system for leaks;
  • Automatic adjustment;
  • Burner settings.

The best German gas boilers The most efficient, reliable and functional models on the market

Which boiler model is ultimately better to choose?

In fact, the choice of Wolf gas boilers is small, and if the budget is limited, the Wolf FGG-K-24 would be an excellent option (provided that such power is sufficient). This is an excellent wall-mounted boiler, German reliability for relatively little money. Also supports third party external thermostats. The cost of a good external thermostat with programming capabilities is about 5-6 thousand rubles.

If the budget is not so limited, it is better to choose Wolf CGG-3K with an additional interface module that allows you to control the boiler from a smartphone. In this case, you can get a technologically advanced, one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly boilers on the market, with convenient and functional controls.

In other cases, if the choice is made among condensing boilers: for small houses - wall-mounted and highly efficient Wolf FGB; for large private houses and industrial premises with an area of 900-1,000 m2 - floor-standing Wolf MGK-2.

Known faults of Wolf boilers

Even with Premium class boilers, something breaks down over time, the only difference is in the number of cases and their frequency. According to the statistics of service calls, the most common parts that fail are: control board, ignition electrode, turbine. Separately, it is worth examining the most common operational problems, which are not always associated with a breakdown:

+ Pressure drops

If the pressure in the heating circuit drops, first of all, it is necessary to check the system for leaks (both all communications and the inside of the boiler). To inspect the boiler inside, you need to remove the front panel, paying special attention to the heat exchanger, three-way valve and all connections. Most often, the feed tap may leak. All possible reasons for a drop in water pressure in domestic gas boilers

+ Doesn’t start/Won’t turn on

If the boiler does not react in any way when turned on, first of all, you need to check whether the heating system taps are open and whether the water filter is clogged. For one of these reasons, the indicator on the boiler usually flashes green. The most common cause of failure is the failure of the flow sensor, then the indicator usually flashes red. Less often, failure of the entire control board (due to voltage drop) is possible.

Most common error codes

All Wolf gas boilers have an autodiagnostic function; for all models it has a large number of error codes (up to 70), thanks to which you can quickly and accurately determine the malfunction.

+ E51 (22)

Insufficient traction. Most often, the problem is icing of the chimney head; it is enough to carefully knock off the ice and then take care of the insulation of the chimney. Rebooting the boiler also often helps. If the problem cannot be resolved, most likely the problem is a breakdown of the pneumatic relay (thrust sensor) or turbine (clogging, damage to the blades).

+ E2 (04)

Problems with igniting the burner. The most common problem is a clogged or failed ignition electrode. But first of all, you need to make sure that the gas supply shut-off valve is not closed and that the pressure in the line is within normal limits. You may need to adjust the nozzles, in which case it is better to call a specialist.

+ E81

Eeprom error. Usually it is enough to reset the settings and reboot the boiler. Less often, the error indicates a malfunction of the electronic control board.

Good afternoon!
I’ve been periodically going to stores in the city for probably half a year now, concerned about the problem of choosing a gas boiler. I definitely want a German boiler; in terms of quality, I trust only Germans. I slowly decided on the Junkers Ceraclass Comfort boiler, or as a last resort Vaillant turboTEC plus. The boilers are of very high quality, the functionality is approximately the same. Recently, an acquaintance said that they sell some other German boilers, and a representative office has opened. It turns out they sell Wolf boilers. Based on the characteristics, they chose the Wolf CGG-1K-24 model for me, the boiler itself looks very beautiful and powerful, I wanted to buy it right away. But I decided to ask you what kind of company it is, is the quality decent, and how do these boilers generally work? Thank you in advance. Igor I.

WOLF - high-level heating equipment. The quality is impeccable in German, no “left-handed” components, everything is thought out, everything is in its place. The boilers have very high efficiency and low emissions (very important in Europe). If you have a representative office in your city and the problem of service and spare parts has been completely resolved, Wolf CGG-1K-24 is definitely a very worthy choice.

I’ve had a WOLF CGB-K 24 installed for 5 years now, it’s an excellent device, be sure to buy a weather-sensitive control module, it’s more comfortable in the house and the consumption is lower because it doesn’t overheat.
no problem, turn it on and forget it. once a year you need to clean the burner from deposits of combustion products... and that’s it. You can clean it yourself according to the manual, everything is in the pictures. Artem

What can I say, German products rule. Where have I heard that the percentage of defects among Germans is within 1-2%, yes, not domestic boilers of course). In general, I like everything German. For example, the STAYER tool, so far everything I have is of excellent quality, nothing has broken over the years of service. Now I only buy Germans or Chinese for their price.

Any equipment from the listed items can be installed without a doubt, since these boilers are practically “classmates”, and the price difference is small. A very important parameter when choosing a boiler should be the presence of a good (better - authorized) service technician, so that in case of problems you do not have to wait three months for components and the repairs are carried out by qualified personnel, and not by a shady person who will ruin everything and then say that “that’s how it is.” was"! It’s not worth taking a CBG-K brand boiler.
Its main problem is that the heating water heat exchanger is made of aluminum, since the boiler is designed to operate in condensation mode; during one season of operation, a white coating is deposited on the fins of the boiler... most likely sulfate or sulfite.... which cannot be removed by anything... no brush wolf…. no chemistry. This is not the case in boilers with a stainless steel heat exchanger. his second problem is the connection of the heat exchanger to the boiler... the heat exchanger is inserted with its aluminum pipes into brass fittings... after 4-5 years, the pipes are eaten away by electrochemical corrosion... for non-believers and Wolf's employees, I'm posting photos of one of the CGB K-24 heat exchangers which has worked for 5 years. For questions to Wolf There is only one answer - REPLACEMENT OF HEAT EXCHANGER costing from 15 thousand + labor + gaskets. These heat exchangers were repaired by welding in new pipes, but their service life is extended by a maximum of a year... two... because the acid from the condensate eats up the radiator fins... 1. Service life of the boiler?
2. What coolant was used? (Requires coolant analysis and water treatment project) 3. When was the last service performed? 4. How was the boiler powered? (Detailed power supply diagram) 5. A grounding loop design with a grounding device organization diagram is required. We are waiting for answers to all the above questions. After which it will be possible to draw conclusions in order to avoid a distorted picture. Denis Wolf

Also, I want to note that the topic of the question was what can you say about the Wolf boiler of the CGG-1K series - a traditional wall-mounted boiler that has nothing to do with the condensing boiler of the CGB series.
For an objective answer, please answer the above questions regarding the CGB condensing boiler, since the service life of the equipment depends on grounding and other points specified in the questions. Wolf Denis
